Why it’s good for boys to read:

  • Fast-paced action and space adventure: A teenage boy gets caught in an interplanetary war (Earth vs. Venus/Mars), leading to escapes, battles, survival challenges, and travel across the solar system—including teaming up with a friendly “dragon” (Venusian creature).
  • Strong, resourceful male protagonist: The hero, Don Harvey, is independent, quick-thinking, brave, and adapts to tough situations without relying on adults—modeling competence and problem-solving.
  • Themes of self-reliance, courage, loyalty, and growing up: Heinlein’s “juveniles” emphasize personal responsibility, critical thinking, and standing up for what’s right.

What boys get out of it:

  • Excitement and escapism through epic sci-fi thrills.
  • Inspiration to be capable, resilient, and intellectually curious.
  • Subtle lessons in independence and moral decision-making, wrapped in fun adventure rather than preachiness.

It’s concise (~180 pages), engaging, and a great gateway to classic SF for teen/pre-teen boys who like action and exploration.

Don Harvey has been enjoying a brief stay at a ranch on Earth, when he receives an urgent message from his parents to return immediately to their home on Mars.  As it turns out, war is brewing between forces on Earth and on Mars, which is brought home to him when his Mars-bound ship is boarded by forces from Earth, and Don ends up (along with an amiable dragon), changing to a ship bound for Venus.  Don’s adventures and misadventures eventually lead to his return to his home on Mars.
